Q AND A:
How did you get the name chefechefe?
It’s catchy. I just liked watching adding the “e” to chef and loved how it sounded. It resonated with me because I wanted to be different. It now sounds different.
Sounds catchy.
How did you first become interested in cooking, and what inspired you to become a chef?
Honestly I think, one thanksgiving, my grandmother and mother inspired me took. It inspired me because I was very eager to learn after there.
I used to stand at the kitchen walkway, and my grandmother used to say “stay right there”. I would stand watch my mother cook; and it was almost as if she was hiding a secret
Recipe or something. Ever since then, my curiosity led me to where I am as a chef. My Father and I used to have “cook-offs” and I’d always win. I ultimately grew up in a house where food was what brought everyone in the family together. It was like “ya’ll coming over this weekend?” Food was always one of the driving factors in our family.
What are some of the challenges you face as a chef, and how do you overcome them?
My biggest challenge as a chef for me, would be creativity, and consistency. Those are the two major keys you have to deliver at all times. You have to be on point.
One slip up, and that can really affect the kitchen. You want people to eat your food, and really have an experience while they eat it. That’s an example of being creative in the kitchen. When I create my special dishes, and I watch people eat my special creation. I know I do something right just by watching people’s reaction.
One of my favorite special dishes is “Fried Collard-Greens”. I’ve been cooking so long that I know at this point, I believe in myself. I love cooking. If I had to do something for the rest of my life for free. This would be it.
Overcoming my challenges involves cooking. Ultimately this is a lifestyle for me, and I’m cool with it. Almost every person that tries my food. They seem to walk by and always compliment me for it. I know I’m doing something right. So consistency is also very important. Can’t be consistent if you don’t love what you do.
What advice would you give to someone aspiring to become a chef?
Do your research. Learn food. Learn Protein. Learn Vegetables. Utilize what you have around you as far as social media, and other resources you can use to educate yourself on what you think you already know. Keep your head down and always be humble. Don’t speak too much. Nobody knows it all. And as a chef. I’m still always thinking of new things, and new ideas in the kitchen. For the young dudes out here. Try different things in the kitchen and be consistent.
What are some of your most valuable accomplishments?
Being on the news changed me. It made me feel like I have to turn up. This is the time to say keep going. Keep doing content. All this is, is people watching now. They’re asking “what’s next” - so everyday has a gameplay. Now I’m putting all my ideas to work.
How do you envision the future of your culinary career and the local food scene?
That’s a good question. I think like, for the future. I might be DC food culture. I think I might be part of the new DC culture. I grew up in the right era. The 90’s. I came up where food became even more popular. My mom and dad can’t say that. These new businesses on social media now - have tools that weren’t available before. So now that I have these tools and Im able to leverage that with my new popularity. It’s a given for me at this point. I think I can help impact the future of DC. I believe if I keep being creative, I’ll be able to stay on top. I want to do that more. Being used to being in front of the camera now. Because ultimately that’s what social media runs off of. Gotta keep my content going.
So there you have it folks! Possibly one of the best chefs in DC for 2024. Being included in the local news is just the beginning for Chefchefe. We're sure he'll be taking the culinary throne here in DC for years to come.
